Padre’s Ponderings for May 2026

Church is not a spectator sport. I recognize that not everyone is into sports, but by now you should know I enjoy alliteration. One of the promises we make during Holy Baptism is to continue in the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in the prayers. Additionally, we promise to proclaim by word and example the Good News of God in Christ. To fulfill these promises, we need to remember that we aren’t in this alone. Together, we are the Body of Christ.

St. John’s is on the cusp of becoming a new and dynamic community. To be fair, we’ve had what we needed all along, but I sense a new energy on Sunday mornings, during coffee hour, and at various ministry team meetings. There seems to be a renewed hope with and for St. John’s, and a readiness to walk forward together in these challenging political times. People seem to be more patient with one another than when I first arrived. Folks are expressing their ideas and are willing to put in the time and effort to implement them.

As baptized and beloved children of God, part of our identity is as active participants. To be clear, I’m not talking about earning God’s love or earning salvation (or any variant). I’m not talking about earning God’s favor or reducing grace to a mere transaction.

God is the initiator of all love, and we are the recipients, called forth to intentionally receive Christ’s love and to share it. Every member of St. John’s has a vital role to play in our vibrant community, whether that be in prayer, invitation, generosity, service, hospitality, pastoral listening, and more. I am grateful for the vital roles you play, and I invite you to be mindful of where and how Jesus is calling you to participate in the life of St. John’s ministries today. More and more is being offered. To what will you be called?

Grace,
Eric+
