“In C” Performance on
Join us Sunday, October 12th, at 4 p.m. for a once in a lifetime performance of Terry Riley’s Minimalist masterpiece, “In C,” at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Charleston. Both musicians and audience members are invited.
“In C” is a guided improvisation of 53 short, simple musical phrases that can be performed by any number of musicians. Each performance is unique. Both vocalists and instrumentalists are welcome, and any instrument -- acoustic or amplified -- can be played. Musicians are expected to exercise “polyphonic courtesy” and perform softly enough to hear the other performers. There is no conductor, but rather musicians follow the composer’s written instructions and proceed through the phrases with the help of an eighth note High C pulse.
Participants are required to attend one of two practice sessions that will be held in the week prior to the performance, on Wednesday, October 8th, at 6:30 p.m. or at 2:30pm on Sunday, October 12th. While there will be plenty of chairs, participants are asked to bring their own music stands. Sheet music will be provided in both C and Bb.
