Kitchen Dedicated to Four Women

From Manna Meal’s early days, four women stood out as especially devoted workers. Dwight Foley, who funded the restoration of our professional-grade kitchen, has honored them with a bronze plaque. Dwight says each woman stayed involved from the meal’s early days “until health issues or moving into care facilities caused them to stop.”

Carter Blundon (born 1931) regularly helped serve Manna Meal guests while also leading our Altar Guild for over 50 years. Her daughter, Augusta, began her involvement as a teenage volunteer and later served as a board member. At age 94, Carter is believed to be one of the oldest members of St. John’s.

Mary Coburn (1930-2023) was a volunteer from the early days until she moved away to be with family following her husband Curt’s death. Curt served as our volunteer church financial manager. While Mary was involved in many parish activities, she is perhaps best remembered for her carrot cake!

Judy Lewis (1936-2013), wife of the Rev. Jim Lewis, who started Manna Meal, was involved as both volunteer and board member. Following the Lewis’s return to Charleston in 2001, Judy continued to work with Manna Meal and also became active in other ministries, including choir, vestry, and the Straight and Gay Alliance.

Janet Morris (1922-2024), widow of our former rector, the Rev. Tom Morris, served as a volunteer from the early days and is fondly remembered for bringing a carful of donated food from Spring Hill Bakery every Sunday.
