Concerts @ St. John’s: March 17th

Andrew Egbuchiem

On Sunday March 17 at 4pm Concerts @ St. John's is excited to present countertenor Andrew Egbuchiem and pianist Vicki Cavendish in a program including Baroque operatic arias for countertenor, recent works written as part of the rising interest in the countertenor voice, and for the occasion, a bit of Irish. Admission is free, with donations gratefully accepted to sustain the series.  A reception follows. St. John's Episcopal Church is at 1105 Quarrier Street at the corner of Leon Sullivan in Charleston.

In 17th and early 18th-century opera the roles of young heroes were very often assigned to the high male voice, the real hero being one who could hit the high notes. Baritones and basses were relegated at best to be grand old men, or otherwise, villains, beasts, and monsters.

Egbuchiem is currently a rising star in New York, following extensive study and numerous competition awards in his native Africa and in many European countries. Also you may catch him on Matt Jackfert's WVPB radio show, Friday March 15 at 1:30.  For further information, call 304-989-2526. We hope you can join us for this unique special event!
