The Olive Meyer Choral Scholar Program

During the October 25 service, St. John's celebrated Olive Meyer's many years of dedication to our music ministry and the wider community. In honor of her extraordinary contributions, the Choral Scholar Program was officially named the Olive Meyer Choral Scholar Program. Below are the remarks shared by Chris Brown, Music Director, during this special occasion.

Welcome, friends, parishioners, and fellow musicians, as we gather to celebrate a woman who has truly been the musical heartbeat of St. John's Episcopal Church: Olive Meyer.

For years, Olive has filled this sanctuary with grace and vitality. We have heard her spirit in the rafters as our organist, pulling out all the stops, and felt her precision and joy as our handbell director. She has seamlessly supported our ensembles as a flawless accompanist, lent her own voice to the pews as a dedicated choir member, and cultivated moments of deep, contemplative peace as our Taizé organizer. She joined St. John's after a beautiful tenure as organist at St. Matthews, continuing a lifelong legacy of liturgical devotion that has shaped the spiritual lives of so many.

But Olive's influence extends far beyond our Sunday services. To countless students in this area, she is the piano teacher who unlocked a lifelong love of music. As a Nationally Certified Teacher of Music, she represents the absolute gold standard in her field. Her tireless leadership as a member of the Music Teachers National Association and the West Virginia Music Teachers Association, along with her service as district chair, has elevated the craft of teaching for her peers and inspired an entire generation of young artists.

It is fitting that Olive holds dual citizenship in Canada and the United States, as she has always been a natural bridge-builder. Through her teaching, her leadership, and her playing, she brings different worlds together, effortlessly harmonizing the technical brilliance of a master educator with the profound spiritual depth of a devoted church musician.

Because Olive has invested so much of her life in nurturing others' voices and talents, we want to ensure her legacy continues to foster musical excellence in this space for generations to come. Therefore, it is my profound honor to announce that, in recognition of her extraordinary and enduring contributions to our music ministry, we are officially naming our scholar initiative the Olive Meyer Choral Scholar Program.

Olive, thank you for every note, every lesson, and every prayer you have set to music. We are forever grateful to you.
