Prayers for the Repose of the Soul of the Rt. Rev. James "Jim" Waggoner

With deep sadness, we share that the Rt. Rev. James "Jim" Waggoner, Jr., VIII Bishop of Spokane and former priest of the Diocese of West Virginia, died on Friday, February 27.

Bishop Waggoner was ordained a deacon in 1979 and a priest in 1980 by Bishop Atkinson. He became Bishop of Spokane in 2000, with Bishop Atkinson as one of his chief consecrators.

Bishop Waggoner began ordained ministry as deacon-in-charge of Calvary, Montgomery, and Good Shepherd, Hansford; he later served as rector of St. Peter's, Huntington, and Trinity, Martinsburg, before becoming Canon to the Ordinary to Bishop Smith in 1992. He held that position until he became Bishop of Spokane. Following his retirement, he served as Assisting Bishop in the Diocese of Nevada from 2019 until 2022.

Bishop Waggoner was well-regarded in The Episcopal Church by lay and clergy alike and will be remembered for his deep kindness, pastoral nature, and joyful demeanor.

Depart, O Christian soul, out of this world;

In the name of God the Father Almighty who created you;

In the name of Jesus Christ who redeemed you;

In the name of the Holy Spirit who sanctifies you.

May your rest be this day in peace,

and your dwelling place in the Paradise of God.

Into your hands, O merciful Savior, we commend your servant Jim. Acknowledge, we humbly beseech you, a sheep of your own fold, a lamb of your own flock, a sinner of your own redeeming. Receive him into the arms of your mercy, into the blessed rest of everlasting peace, and into the glorious company of the saints in light. Amen.

May his soul and the souls of all the departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace and rise in glory. Amen.
