Finding Home…
As a therapist, I am more aware than ever of the toll the political climate in our country—the stripping away of rights from immigrants, the marginalized, and the most vulnerable—takes on everyday folks, in addition to their own personal challenges. Never have more therapists needed therapy and support for themselves than they do now, as they strive to provide a safe space for clients to problem-solve.
Where is it safe? My “go-to” response is to find your “home,” your “people.” Find a place where you are welcomed and where you find folks who share your values and vision. I am witness to the benefits of this each Sunday and throughout the week as ministry teams at St. John’s meet for fellowship and planning. I see it in the teamwork of the Vestry, the Altar Guild, and the regulars at Wednesday Eucharist—just to name a few.
These teams operate a little like families: bonding through meeting and working together, tolerating differences, and celebrating and forgiving each other when necessary. Most recently, I have been privileged to witness this teamwork in the four talented adults who have volunteered to lead our youth twice a month from 9:30 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. Thank you, Lora Witt, Ellen Blackwood, Laura Jacobs, and Alex Bradley!
If you are not yet connected to a ministry team, please consider signing up for one. Congregational Life, chaired by Maggie McCabe and Brian Hamra, is always looking for help, as are many other teams. Dive in and say “yes!”
I hope St. John’s is a safe place for all of you to experience home and family. We need it now more than ever.
