Finding Meaning Through Service

Shortly after retiring, I found myself struggling with how to meaningfully fill my days. I had been blessed with so much that it seemed only natural to give back to others now that I had more time. As an educator, I led my students in serving the larger community. Over the years, I also volunteered with Scouting, the Red Cross, and various church-related events.

With the National Day of Service coming up on Sept. 11, I urge you to find something that fits your skills and interests. Opportunities for ministry abound here at St. John’s. You can also visit the Volunteer WV website to help identify your perfect placement in the larger arena: volunteer.wv.gov

As a member of a faith community, you recognize personal responsibility for service along the lines of the Golden Rule— do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Volunteering is a win-win situation; it makes you feel good! By giving my time and energy to others, I receive even more in return.

Yes, I could stay home and indulge in mindless television or scrolling through social media. Or, I could immerse myself in a world created within an interesting novel. Or, I could lose myself in entertainment activities that dull my senses to society’s needs.

But I choose to help others in ministry and community service. Join me!
