of Margaret Lindsay

St. John’s Episcopal Church Resolution

WHEREAS, Margaret E. Lindsey of Lookout, Fayette County, West Virginia, was instrumental in establishing the Straight and Gay Alliance (SAGA) at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Charleston in 2000, creating a safe space for members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered (LGBT) community and their allies to discuss issues of mutual concern; and

WHEREAS, Margaret embodied SAGA’s mission statement, “to advocate the dignity of sexuality in all its genders, orientations, and life-enriching relationships in the spirit of God’s love”; and

WHEREAS, Margaret counseled many people, especially the youth as they were coming out, and many of their parents, supporting the concept of coming out as a process and not an event; and

WHEREAS, Margaret has been a central resource for issues in the LGBT community in Charleston as well as West Virginia, has developed educational programs and continues to support opportunities for community education; and

WHEREAS, Margaret’s eloquence with the written and spoken word is matched only by her lifelong commitment to equality, inclusivity and social justice; and

WHEREAS, it is meet and right that Margaret Lindsey receive official recognition for her work in this Parish, with SAGA, and with those to whom she has ministered;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Vestry of St. John’s Episcopal Church, Charleston, in meeting assembled, that this Vestry does hereby express its grateful appreciation to Margaret for her years of service and many contributions to SAGA and this Parish; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the Vestry present a copy of this Resolution to Margaret Lindsey with the appreciation and gratitude of the Vestry and Congregation of the Parish.
